Self-Determination Theory: Understanding Your Motivation

Have you ever wondered why some people are more motivated than others? Self-determination theory (SDT) is a macro theory of human motivation and personality that explains why we do the things we do.

SDT suggests that all humans have an innate need for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are met, we become self-determined and our motivation increases. This means that if we feel like we have control over our lives, if we feel competent in what we're doing, and if we feel connected to others, then our motivation will be higher.

One way to increase your motivation is to focus on developing your skills and abilities. When you feel competent in something, it can give you a sense of control and autonomy over your life. It can also help you form meaningful relationships with others as you share your knowledge and experiences with them.

Another way to increase your motivation is to set goals for yourself that are achievable yet challenging. This will help you stay focused on the task at hand while also giving you a sense of accomplishment when you reach those goals.

Finally, it's important to remember that everyone has different motivations and needs. What works for one person may not work for another so it's important to find what works best for you as an individual.

Self-determination theory is a great way to understand why people do the things they do and how to increase their own motivation levels. By focusing on developing skills, setting achievable goals, and understanding our own individual needs, we can become more self-determined and motivated in our lives!
